DESCRIPTION:Come Join the City Nature Challenge!\nDesert Rivers Audubon proudly supports City Nature Challenge presented by members Mel and Adam Narish. The City Nature Challenge is a worldwide BioBlitz where communities work together to document birds\, plants\,  and wildlife to create a yearly global snapshot of life on Earth. From April 24–27\, participants across the Greater Phoenix area (and the rest of the world!) will photograph wild plants\, birds and animals using the iNaturalist app. \nAnyone can participate and every observation helps scientists better understand urban biodiversity. No experience needed. If you can take a photo\, you can do this! At the event your leaders will show you how to capture species using the iNaturalist app\, so you can contribute to real scientific research. \nYour Observations Can Make A Difference! \nEvent Details\n\nLeaders: Adam Narish and Mel Narish\, Master Naturalist Trainee\nDate: Saturday\, April 25\, 2026\nTime: 8am-10am\nLocation: Higley Ponds\, 5250 S. Higley Rd\, Gilbert\, AZ 85928 Cross Streets- Ocotillo & Higley Rd\n\nThe parking lot for Higley Ponds  is 1/2 mile north of the intersection of Higley Rd and Ocotillo Rd. When coming from the north on Higley Rd. there is no left turn into the parking lot. Drive to Ocotillo Rd. and make a U-turn. Continue north on Higley Rd about 1/2 mile. Make a right turn into the parking lot. \nGetting Ready\nWe’ll be collecting real data that will be used in research! (How exciting!) DESCRIPTION:Our bird walk at Gilbert Riparian Preserve is followed by an optional coffee break at Brick Road Coffee formerly Empower Coffee Roasters. \nAt 9:00 am Gilbert Park Ranger\, Collin Goode will present “Community Parks\, Native Wildlife & Conservation: A Gilbert Park Ranger’s Perspective” at Brick Road Coffee. \nCollin will be discussing the role of Gilbert park rangers within our parks\, our involvement with wildlife—especially at the Riparian Preserve—and sharing a few memorable wildlife rescue stories from over the years. \nBio: Collin is an Arizona outdoorsman and wildlife photographer dedicated to celebrating the Southwest’s unique landscapes and wildlife while inspiring others to protect them. Above all\, I’m a proud dad\, committed to preserving wild places and outdoor experiences for the next generation \nBirds & Brew Bird Walk & Coffee Break is held the 4th Tuesday of each month\, September thru May.  It that combines a bird walk and an informal presentation afterward.

DESCRIPTION:Danny Roper-Jones\, Center Director will present an update on recent progress and revitalized programs at the Nina Mason Pulliam Rio Salado Audubon Center\, focused on reinvesting in community programming\, facilities\, operations\, and partnerships\, along with upcoming plans and next steps.\nAlso\, an introduction to the new Rio Salado Habitat Restoration Working Group\, leading community-based conservation and habitat restoration through collaboration and multi-spectral drone mapping. \nDanny “Earthman Dan” is a longtime environmental educator and science communicator with a background in primate behavior and anthropology. His conservation work spans Madagascar\, Nigeria\, and Cambodia\, where he collaborated with local educators to produce nature films\, develop wildlife education programs\, and lead public outreach through storytelling and media.\nAs founder of Fauna in Focus\, he created films for Cambodian audiences and helped design the country’s first Nature Discovery Center. Since joining Audubon Southwest in 2023\, Danny has been helping lead efforts at the Rio Salado Audubon Center to enhance visitor experiences\, expand exhibits\, and grow community programs.

DESCRIPTION:Join us for this urban wetlands bird walk! \nWide\, flat trails parallel the groundwater recharge ponds for easy viewing and comfortable walking. These shallow ponds are frequented by a large number of waterfowl in the fall\, winter and spring seasons. Hawks\, hummingbirds\, roadrunners\, flycatchers\, Abert’s Towhee and Curved-Billed Thrashers are common year-round. \nThe street address for the parking lot is 5250 S. Higley Rd\, Gilbert\, AZ 852928. It is 1/2 mile north of the intersection of Higley Rd and Ocotillo Rd. When coming from the north on Higley Rd. you are not able to make a left hand turn into the parking lot. Drive all the way to Ocotillo Rd.\, make a U-turn. Continue north on Higley Rd about 1/2 mile. Make a right-hand turn int the parking lot. You will find the group gathering there. There is a port-a-potty in the parking area if needed. \nLocation: 5250 S.
