Kachina Wetlands is a unique HotSpot with a wide variety of wetland and upland species. Just 10 minutes south of Flagstaff, with beautiful views of the San Francisco Peaks, it is a great destination for escaping the September heat of Phoenix!

This is a Membership Appreciation Field Trip! You must be a Desert Rivers Audubon member to attend. If you are not a member and would like to join, please visit https://desertriversaudubon.org/join/ and join within one day of registering for this trip. Membership options start at $25.

We will meet at 8:30 a.m. at Kachina Wetlands for a walk around this Important Bird Area looking for migrants and seasonal species. We will look for Lark Sparrows, Vesper Sparrows, Western Bluebirds, Yellow-headed and Red-winged Blackbirds, Osprey, coots and grebes, Cassin’s Kingbirds, and migrating shorebirds. We might even hear a Virginia Rail or Sora. From Kachina Wetlands we will carpool to the Kachina Wash-Pumphouse Trail and look for Band-tailed Pigeons and Acorn Woodpeckers.

For those who want to continue, we will stop for to-go lunches at the Subway at the Kachina exit #333 (or bring your own lunch). We will eat lunch at picnic tables at the Arboretum at Flagstaff, about a 20-minute drive. There is an entrance fee to the Arboretum, but they also honor other garden and arboretum passes such as the Desert Botanical Gardens, so bring yours if you have one. After lunch we will walk around the Arboretum and look for other species such as the Black-headed Grosbeak, Broad-tailed Hummingbird, and Western Flycatcher. Leader: Margaret Dyekman

Registration is required. For more information and to register click here.

This event is limited to 10 participants.
