On this field trip, we’ll explore two entirely different habitats: the Box Bar recreation area on the Verde River just north of the town of Rio Verde, and Fountain Hills Lake, right in Fountain Hills. At Box Bar, we should see common birds of the riparian/desert interface, and with luck, a few of the incoming winter visitors like Ruby-crowned Kinglet, Northern House Wren, Orange-crowned and Yellow-rumped Warblers, with possible vireos and gnatcatchers. At Fountain Hills Lake, many of the wintering waterfowl and a few shorebirds should have arrived. With luck, we’ll see some Hooded Mergansers, Eared Grebes and a Bald Eagle.
Walking is uneven and rocky at Box Bar and mostly on sidewalks at Fountain Hills Lake. Restrooms are available at the lake. Leader, Kathe Anderson
What to bring: Binoculars, sturdy shoes/hiking boots, plenty of water and a hat.
Where to meet: Denny’s, 17053 E Shea Blvd., Fountain Hills, AZ 85268. There is plenty of parking toward the back of the parking lot. The meeting place for additional carpooling logistics will be determined a few days before the trip with your trip leader Kathe Anderson.
