Topic/Title: What’s in a (bird) name?

Speaker: Kathe Anderson

Description: While naming birds after people is falling out of favor, what is the right way to name a bird? By its color, body parts, location, habitat or sound? In this interactive presentation, we’ll look at options for bird names, perhaps some of the most unusual names, and create a few new ones.

Bio: Kathe is an avid birder who leads bird walks, teaches classes, and contributes bird-count data to scientific research. For more than 20 years, she has led hundreds of walks for individuals, conservation organizations, private groups, and lifelong-learning programs. She has also taught dozens of hands-on birding classes for organizations including the Verde Valley Nature and Birding Festival, Southwest Wings Nature Festival, ASU’s Osher Lifelong Learning Institute, Arizona State Parks, and the Desert Botanical Garden. She loves sharing her passion for birds with others.

We meet at the entrance to the preserve near the parking lot at 6:30 am, then the leader guides the group around the ponds.  About an hour and a half later we travel to Brick Road Coffee, located at 1337 S. Gilbert Rd. in Mesa for coffee, conversation, and a short presentation.

If you cannot make the walk, you are always welcome to join us for coffee/tea and the presentation about two hours after the walk start time.
