Speaker: David L Pearson
Description: Over four demanding weeks, our team of professional biologists and volunteer citizen scientists surveyed the remote islands of the central South Atlantic from our ship, the MV Hondius. We recorded 11 whale species, 13 species of dolphins and porpoises, and robust breeding colonies of albatrosses, penguins, and endemic landbirds. However, the environmental hardships of the region were quickly overshadowed by an internal crisis: an unexpected hantavirus outbreak aboard our vessel that put us all at risk.

Bio: David Pearson’s research explores the connections between ecology, conservation, ecotourism, and education to promote sustainable biodiversity. His work spans a wide range of organisms, from crabs and insects to birds and Paramecium, and habitats worldwide, including tropical rainforests, coral atolls, and desert grasslands. He is currently an adjunct professor at ASU and co-chair of the IUCN Species Survival Commission’s Tiger Beetle Specialist Group.
